The silver lining to this dark cloud is the many rescuers and shelters who are working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of animals seeking adoption. We are using this space to highlight some of the most dedicated animal shelters and rescuers in the United Arab Emirates.

Based in Umm Al Quwain, Stray Dogs Center was founded in 2013 by Amirah William. Today, Amirah continues to run the shelter with the help of a paid staff of 9 caretakers, a foreman, a manager and over 350 volunteers.

The main objective of the shelter is to improve the welfare of animals in the United Arab Emirates. They do this by finding homes for all animals released to them and by providing TNR (trap, neuter and release) as well as medical assistance to the stray animal population in the UAE. Although their efforts are predominantly focused on Ras Al Khaimah, they continue to work hard for animal welfare throughout the Emirates. Michelle Francid, who founded Animals and Us in 2006, has been a rescuer for more than 15 years. When she opened the shelter in Fujairah, her main goal was to eradicate the pain and fear that humans inflict on animals.

The shelter rescues stray and abandoned animals, provides veterinary assistance, helps find homes for unwanted animals through adoption, and helps educate the public about responsible animal ownership. They operate entirely on donations from the public and run the shelter through the support of a team of volunteers armed with their love of animals.
